Michael J. Johns Sr.
Michael joined his father in the business full time in 1957. As the third generation of the Johns family to be involved in the monument industry, Michael has been recognized as a leader in the industry and has served as President of the following professional associations: Monument Builders of Ohio, Monument Builders of North America and The American Institute of Commemorative Art (A.I.C.A.). He is a past trustee for the A.I.C.A. Education Foundation. The American Institute of Commemorative Art is limited to sixty members by invitation who exhibit outstanding ability in the field of Memorial Design. Mr. Johns was invited to membership in 1972. He has also earned the Certified Memorialist for Life designation of Monument Builders of North America. There are approximately 140 Certified Memorialists in the world.
He has received national recognition for his designs. In 1996 and 1999 he was the recipient of the “Eugene H. Faehnle,” F.A.I.C.A. award for excellence in creative memorial design, presented annually by The American Institute of Commemorative Art. Mr. Johns is the only two-time winner of this prestigious award and has since been made a Fellow of that association.
Mr. Johns is a frequent seminar speaker in the death care industry on such topics as personalizing memorial design, creativity and proportion of design, special lettering and hand carving and selling personalization. He has addressed State and National Associations of Cemeteries on memorialization and consulted in cemetery design. He helped the Catholic Cemetery Association of the diocese of Cleveland lay out and set regulations for their new monument sections. He frequently consulted with Lake View Cemetery on section design and arrangement, and was a consultant on the development of their Community Mausoleum and Columbarium.
In addition to his business, Mr. Johns has been very involved with his wife Nicolette (now deceased) in his family of six children and many grandchildren. He has served on the Council of his parish and serves as a Eucharistic Minister. He has served as a Scout Master and District Commissioner for the Greater Cleveland Council of Boy Scouts.
He is a member and Past President of the Hillcrest Rotary Club and has served Rotary as a District Governor, zone leadership trainer and as a voting delegate to three Rotary International Councils on legislation. He has served as the District Leadership Development Trainer for Rotary District 6630, and as National Advisor for the Permanent Fund of Rotary International. In 2010 he was the Regional Vice Chairman in North Central USA for The Rotary Leadership Institute. Mr. Johns has served as a member of the nominating committee for Director of Rotary Zone 28. He served a two year term on the Rotary International Board of Directors and has represented the President of Rotary International at numerous District Conferences and Institutes in several Countries around the world. Currently is the Chairman of the Rotary International Districting Committee.
